Hard word

A direct, short title focused on the main action the user will complete on the page. The title should include the words 'easy read'.

  • Maximum character limit of 50.
  • Start with “Register for…”  or “Search for..”

A short paragraph that expands on what the main action on the page is and why it is important.

Rules for long description:

  • The supporting text should explain who the page is for, what the user will learn and the benefit of the page.
  • Maximum character limit of 350.

Rules for short description:

  • The short description will not appear on page, it is used for the topic page tile description (populated from metadata).
  • The supporting text always following the format of [intro phrase] [sub-topic], [sub-topic] and [sub-topic], so you can [user outcome].
  • Use one of these three intro phrases: “learn how to”, “understand” or “find out”.
  • Include the top three keywords for the page.
  • Maximum character limit of 90.

Short titles used to break up the content into sub-topics.

  • Maximum length of one line.
  • Don’t hyperlink the headings.
  • Avoid replicating the page title.

Images are used to aid understanding of the corresponding text, they should always illustrate the text and are not used for decorative purposes.

Rules for images:

  • Images are illustrations (not photographs).
  • Images are styled using business.gov.au illustration guidelines. Easy read illustrations are smaller than the standard illustations so they are not required to include the background fill and background lines.
  • Maximum image width is 190px. Image height can vary although a square shape is recommended.
  • Multiple images can be used in one content block to illustrate bullet points.
  • Images are optional.

Rules for content block text:

  • 8-15 words maximum.
  • No stand-alone bullet lists.
  • No nested lists.
  • Paragraphs and bullet lists only, no headings.

Bold means hard word. This word should be further explained in the same content block.

Guidelines for use

Purpose

The aim of Easy Read is to give more people access to information.

Easy Read is a way to present information for people who are not familiar with English, or who have low literacy or learning disability.

Easy Read’s unique layout and style presents information so it’s easy to understand. The content can explain complex information about law, policy or obligations.

Easy Read often involves using images to complement the text. It can be a good basis for translating content into other languages.
